Skills, Seals, & Opportunities
Skills, Seals, & Opportunities are the foundation of PortfoliOH. Skills are simple concepts used as benchmarks for measuring student ability. In PortfoliOH, a collection of related Skills is called a Seal (state associated) or an Opportunity (business associated). Documenting and verifying sufficient evidence for all the Skills in a Seal or Opportunity can help students meet graduation requirements and fast track them for job opportunities.
For example, in Ohio the OhioMeansJobs – Readiness Seal is a state-defined Seal defined by 14 key Skills which can be used as a graduation requirement. PortfoliOH can help students document the Skills related to this Seal by documenting evidence in school, their community, or the workplace. Additionally, for students in Ohio PortfoliOH can help create the necessary documentation to complete their graduation requirements by exporting their work as a downloadable file.
Skills
Each skill in PortfoliOH includes an icon, description, and a collection of look fors – simple true/false statements that can be used when evaluating work related to the Skill. Skills are displayed as hexagons with two borders; when viewing student details the inner border will be filled in illustrating their progress towards completing the requirements for the Skill.
All Activities created by Educators are aligned to Skills, and any student Evidence created on the platform must be tagged to a Skill. Evaluated time spent completing evidence for a Skill is used to measure progress towards Skill completion.
As an educator, you can view the Skills available to you by visiting the Skills page to explore and learn more.
Seals & Opportunities
Seals are a collection of related skills created by the State. Opportunities are a collection of related skills created by a business or other organization. Completing a Seal or Opportunity may make students eligible for special job opportunities, help them complete graduation requirements, or otherwise indicate their proficiency for a career path or field.
Seals and Opportunities are displayed as circles. When viewing student details the outer ring will be filled to illustrate the student’s progress towards completing the Seal or Opportunity. Seals and Opportunities are completed by making progress towards their component Skills.
